SK hynix weighs investor for $3b China chip site
SK hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker and supplier to Nvidia, is weighing options for its semiconductor packaging and testing facility in Chongqing, China, including bringing in an investor to fund growth or selling a stake, according to people familiar with the matter.
The facility could be valued at about US$3 billion. Talks with Chinese funds and industry players are preliminary and may not lead to a deal, and SK hynix could retain a minority stake.
Established in 2013, the Chongqing facility packages and tests dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and NAND chips rather than manufacturing wafers.
China remains a major production base for SK hynix, with other sites in Wuxi for DRAM and in Dalian for 3D NAND through its subsidiary Solidigm.
Separately, SK hynix said on Aug. 7 that it plans to invest 54 trillion won (US$38 billion) in South Korea, including a new DRAM fabrication plant in Yongin and a NAND fabrication plant in Cheongju, in response to rising memory demand for AI.
