SK hynix tops global memory chip market in Q3 2025: report
SK hynix maintained its position as the top global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) supplier in Q3 2025, according to Omdia, holding a 34.1% share of the market by sales.
This marked its third consecutive quarter in the lead, despite a 5.3 percentage-point drop from the previous quarter.
Samsung Electronics increased its share to 33.7%, while Micron Technology held 25.8%.
Global DRAM sales rose 30% quarter-on-quarter to US$40.3 billion, driven by higher prices.
SK hynix had overtaken Samsung in DRAM market share in Q1 2025.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SK hynix’s lead narrows as Samsung closes gap and Micron surges
- Top spot stays with SK hynix at 33.2% share while Samsung reached 32.6% for a 0.6 percentage point gap 1.
- SK hynix led 3Q25 with $13.75 billion revenue but posted 12.4% quarter-over-quarter growth 1.
- Samsung’s bit shipments beat forecasts with 30.4% revenue growth to $13.5 billion 1.
- Micron posted the strongest growth at 53.2% quarter over quarter, reaching $10.65 billion and gaining 3.7 percentage points to capture 25.7% share 1.
- High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) demand stays strong, yet conventional DRAM pricing and bit-shipment execution still drive results 1. Samsung and Micron are gaining as supplier inventories near depletion entering 4Q25 1.
Memory efficiency software and CXL vendors should accelerate enterprise outreach now
- Conventional DRAM contract prices may jump 45-50% quarter over quarter in 4Q25 as inventories empty, so enterprises face pressure to cut total cost of ownership 1.
- Modern server CPUs support CXL Type-3 devices (memory expansion modules attached over CXL), and demos put hybrid systems (servers mixing DRAM and CXL-attached memory) at 95-100% of DRAM-only throughput with 5-10µs (microseconds) added latency 23.
- For CXL hardware vendors, the CXL market could reach $16 billion by 2028 3.
- Memory compression and optimization software providers can use data that say CXL integration with compression may cut total cost of ownership by up to 50% in cold data storage scenarios (infrequently accessed data) 3.
- AMD and Intel CPUs now support CXL memory expansion 2. Micron says customers expect solid demand through the rest of 2025 4.
