SK Hynix tops $146.7b market cap, 2nd largest in South Korea

On June 25, 2025, South Korea’s SK Hynix reached a market capitalization of over 200 trillion won (US$146.7 billion).

This marks a significant milestone for the semiconductor company.

Its stock rose 7.13% to 278,000 won (US$203,96), making it the country’s second-largest listed firm after Samsung Electronics.

The gain followed a broader KOSPI rally driven by easing Middle East tensions, with the index crossing 3,100 points intraday.

SK Hynix’s growth is supported by its dominance in high bandwidth memory and its upcoming mass production of HBM4 chips in late 2025.

Analysts expect Q2 sales of 20 trillion won (US$14.6 billion) and operating profit of 8.9 trillion won (US$6.5 billion), up 22.5% and 64% year-on-year, respectively.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ SK hynix’s dominance in HBM technology is reshaping the memory market hierarchy

SK hynix has established extraordinary dominance in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market with approximately 70% global market share, a critical advantage as AI computing drives demand for these specialized chips 1.

This technological leadership has enabled a remarkable industry shift, with SK hynix recently overtaking long-time market leader Samsung to become the top global memory vendor by revenue, a significant repositioning in the Korean semiconductor landscape 2.

The company’s strategic focus on HBM has delivered exceptional financial results, with operating profits surging 158% year-over-year to 7.44 trillion won in Q1 2025 and operating margins reaching an impressive 42% 1.

This market cap milestone confirms how SK hynix’s strategic bet on HBM technology is fundamentally altering competitive dynamics in the memory sector, creating substantial shareholder value through technological specialization rather than broad market competition.

2️⃣ Geopolitical factors increasingly determine semiconductor market performance

The semiconductor industry has become notably sensitive to global conflicts, as demonstrated by how the recent easing of Middle East tensions contributed to SK hynix’s market cap milestone.

Recent market data shows that escalating tensions can trigger immediate negative impacts, with Taiwan’s TAIEX index falling by over 350 points amid Middle East concerns, dragging down major semiconductor stocks including TSMC 3.
