SK hynix in talks with Intel on Ohio chip plan: sources

SK hynix, a South Korean memory chip maker, is in exploratory talks with Intel about making memory chips in Ohio, according to three people familiar with the matter.

If a deal goes ahead, it would be SK hynix’s first time making memory chips in the US. No decision has been made.

The company already launched an advanced packaging facility in Indiana, so an Ohio project would expand its US footprint beyond packaging, rather than mark its first semiconductor presence there.

Any arrangement involving advanced memory, such as dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) or high-bandwidth memory (HBM), could face South Korean government review.

Some chip technologies are treated as national core technologies and may require approval for overseas transfer or for setting up foreign production.

Intel has delayed completion of its first Ohio fab to 2030 from an earlier plan to begin production in 2025.

The site is also part of Intel’s US CHIPS package of up to US$7.86 billion.
