SK hynix shares slide as AI memory pricing faces scrutiny

SK hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker, has seen its shares fall 38% from a June peak ahead of earnings as investors question whether high prices for AI memory chips can last.

The company remains the leader in high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

That matters because SK hynix had a 57% share of HBM revenue in the third quarter of 2025, ahead of Samsung’s 22%. While some forecasts placed any price correction after 2026, a supply-chain report said HBM prices could double by 2027.

Competition is also in focus after Samsung reportedly secured qualification from Nvidia for 12-layer HBM3E, initially in limited volumes.

Investors are also watching customer demand after Meta raised capital expenditure guidance for 2026 to $125 billion-$145 billion.

Investors are also looking for updates on shareholder returns. SK hynix’s 2025-2027 policy allocates half of accumulated free cash flow to shareholder returns and said it may consider additional returns if financial targets are met.
