SK hynix shares jump 7% to record high, beats Samsung

Shares in SK Hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker and supplier to Nvidia, jumped more than 7% to a record high on April 27.

The rise came after Intel’s earnings revived investor expectations for demand tied to AI chips.

Samsung Electronics, its South Korean rival, rose 2.5% as investors also weighed a possible strike by unionized workers in South Korea in May.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AI memory demand helps explain the market’s reaction

  • SK Hynix shares jumped as investors reacted to results that included a five-fold rise in quarterly operating profit 1.
  • Demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips used in AI is pushing that growth. SK Hynix said orders for the next three years already top its output capacity 1.
  • The HBM market is set to expand from US$3.9 billion in 2024 to US$15.8 billion by 2030, which gives a sense of the opening ahead 2.
  • Heavy buying is also lifting prices. Contract prices for some Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) chips rose nearly 83% in the first quarter 1.

A rival’s labor dispute could disrupt supply

  • A strike at Samsung Electronics could interrupt global memory chip supply and tighten a market that is already short on chips 3.
  • That may help rivals such as SK Hynix since lower supply would likely keep memory prices elevated 1.
  • Restoring normal chip production can take twice the length of a stoppage, so an 18-day strike could trigger a 36-day production blackout 4.
  • The dispute has grown sharper as pay differences widen. Samsung workers want a bonus cap removed after SK Hynix dropped its own, widening the pay gap between the companies 3.
