SK hynix plans $64b Cheongju chip expansion

South Korean memory chipmaker SK hynix said on July 2 it plans to invest 100 trillion won, or about US$64.38 billion, in Cheongju.

The company plans to build a new NAND memory plant and a chip packaging factory as part of a broader expansion tied to AI-driven demand.

It said 80 trillion won (US$51.2 billion) will go to the NAND plant by 2029 and 20 trillion won (US$12.8 billion) to the packaging site by late 2027.

Meanwhile construction of the new M17 factory due to start next year.

SK hynix said the packaging plant will focus on advanced packaging that combines chips into a single high-density unit to improve performance and energy efficiency.

The 100 trillion won (US$64 billion) Cheongju investment was announced on June 29 under a broader expansion plan involving SK hynix and Samsung Electronics.

South Korea hopes the projects will help double the country’s memory chip production capacity within five years.
