SK Hynix partners with Naver Cloud on AI products

SK hynix and Naver Cloud have entered a partnership to enhance each other’s AI technologies, the companies said on September 10, 2025.

SK hynix, a South Korean memory chip maker, will test and optimize its next-generation AI memory and storage products within Naver Cloud’s real-world AI service environments.

The company aims to validate products using Compute Express Link and Processing-In-Memory technologies at Naver Cloud’s large-scale data centers.

Naver Cloud, the cloud unit of Naver based in South Korea, will update its data center software to work with SK hynix’s new hardware in an effort to improve GPU efficiency, reduce AI service response times, and lower operating costs.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hardware-software optimization partnerships become essential for AI cost efficiency

  • The SK Hynix-Naver Cloud partnership reflects a broader industry shift toward tightly integrated hardware and software optimization, driven by exponential growth in AI inference costs 1.
  • SK Hynix has been developing specialized AI memory solutions since 2018, including the world’s first DDR5 DRAM designed specifically for Big Data, AI, and Machine Learning applications 2.
  • The partnership will test advanced technologies like Compute Express Link and Processing-In-Memory in real-world environments, aiming to improve GPU efficiency and reduce AI service response times 1.
  • This approach addresses a critical industry challenge where AI service providers need not just memory bandwidth and capacity, but optimization across entire data center infrastructure to remain competitive 1.

South Korea’s sovereign AI strategy drives domestic technology partnerships

  • Naver Cloud was selected as one of five elite teams by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT to develop the country’s sovereign AI model, positioning this partnership within a national technological sovereignty initiative 3, 4.
  • The sovereign AI approach focuses on developing solutions tailored to each nation’s unique cultural and social challenges, rather than relying on foreign AI technologies 5.
  • Naver Cloud has already implemented this strategy internationally, deploying CLOVA CareCall in Japan to address aging population needs and establishing partnerships across Southeast Asia for localized AI solutions 6, 5.
  • The partnership with SK Hynix supports South Korea’s goal of building domestic AI infrastructure capabilities, combining Naver’s cloud services expertise with SK Hynix’s advanced memory semiconductor technology 1, 4.
