SK hynix hits $1t valuation as KOSPI reaches record

South Korean memory chipmaker SK hynix became the country’s second listed company, after Samsung Electronics, to surpass a 2,000 trillion won (US$1.3 trillion) market value on June 19.

Semiconductor stocks pushed the KOSPI to a record above 9,300.

SK hynix market capitalization reached about 2,038 trillion won (US$1.32 trillion).

Samsung Electronics climbed above 370,000 won (US$240), bringing its market capitalization to about 2,180 trillion won (US$1.42 trillion).

The two chipmakers now account for about 52% of the Kospi’s total market capitalization. The rally also pushed the combined market value of KOSPI-listed companies above 8,000 trillion won (US$5.2 trillion) for the first time.

Market watchers said the rally showed the KOSPI’s gains were becoming increasingly concentrated in SK hynix and Samsung Electronics.
