SK Hynix expected to post $7b operating profit in Q3 2025

SK Hynix is projected to post over 10 trillion won (US$7 billion) in operating profit for Q3 2025, according to a Yonhap Infomax survey.

The South Korea-based chipmaker is forecast to reach 24.5 trillion won (US$17.1 billion) in sales and 11.3 trillion won (US$7.9 billion) in operating profit for the July-September period.

This would set new company records, surpassing its previous highs of 22.2 trillion won (US$15.5 billion) in sales and 9.2 trillion won (US$6.4 billion) in operating profit from Q2.

SK Hynix would become the second South Korean firm, after Samsung Electronics, to exceed 10 trillion won (US$7 billion) in quarterly operating profit.

Analysts cite the surge to strong demand for high bandwidth memory used in AI, and higher DRAM chip prices.

Counterpoint Research reported that SK hynix’s global memory chip sales rose 13% year-on-year to US$17.5 billion in Q3.

The company will release its Q3 earnings on October 29.

Implications, context, and why it matters.

SK hynix profit rides tight HBM supply as 2026 capacity could shift pricing

  • SK hynix targets Q3 2025 operating profit of 11.3 trillion won, and momentum depends on High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) capacity ramps that the preview leaves vague.
  • The M15X fab opens in Q4 2025 and starts HBM output in 2026. The Yongin cluster (SK Group’s large-scale manufacturing campus) finishes in Q2 2027 1, so supply likely stays tight through 2025 with relief from 2026.
  • HBM4, the next-generation HBM after HBM3E, is set for mass production and gives SK hynix a lead 2. The preview leaves rival catch-up pace and any pricing turn unclear.
  • TSMC expands Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate (CoWoS) packaging for HBM integration with AI processors. Capacity could top 90,000 wafers a month by the end of 2026 3, which may ease bottlenecks while widening access.
