SK Group to sell its semiconductor wafer subsidiary’s stake
SK Group is considering the sale of a controlling stake in its semiconductor wafer subsidiary, SK Siltron Co., as part of a restructuring effort.
SK Siltron is South Korea’s only producer of semiconductor wafers, which are essential for chip manufacturing. The company ranks third globally in market share for 12-inch wafers, with analysts valuing SK Siltron at approximately 5 trillion won (US$3.38 billion).
The group’s holding company, SK Inc., is reportedly in talks with private equity firms about the potential sale.
The stake under consideration is 70.6%, which includes SK Inc.’s 51% ownership and an additional 19.6% linked to a total return swap (TRS) contract.
“Various options are being reviewed as part of our rebalancing efforts, but nothing has been finalized,” an SK official said.
Since last year, SK Group has been restructuring its business portfolio to enhance financial stability and promote long-term strategic growth.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The semiconductor wafer market’s transformation from “ugly duckling” to strategic asset
SK Siltron’s potential sale comes during a significant evolution in the wafer market, which has consolidated dramatically over the past two decades.
The industry has shrunk from approximately 25 players to just five manufacturers now controlling over 90% of the market, positioning SK Siltron’s status as the world’s third-largest 12-inch wafer producer as particularly valuable 1.
This consolidation followed a challenging period where silicon wafers’ share of semiconductor market value declined from 5% in 2007 to just 2% by 2016, before recovering as demand surged 1.
The timing is notable as the global semiconductor market is projected to reach $697 billion in 2025 after record $630.5 billion sales in 2024, with particularly strong demand in memory products which saw a 78.9% increase last year 2.
For potential buyers, SK Siltron represents a rare opportunity to acquire significant market share in a crucial semiconductor supply chain segment that serves as the foundation for all integrated circuits.
2️⃣ SK Group’s semiconductor investment cycle shows strategic pattern
The potential sale of SK Siltron follows a clear pattern of strategic acquisition and divestiture that SK Group has employed to build its semiconductor presence.
