SK Group plans new chip plants as demand rises

SK Group is preparing more semiconductor plants beyond Yongin as demand rises, chairman Chey Tae-won said at the Nikkei Forum.

Chey said the priority is to build Yongin, but demand has sped up planning for the next site.

He said a plant would need power, water, land, and workers, and could be overseas if South Korea cannot provide them.

The next facility could be overseas if South Korea cannot provide them.

Asked about investment after Yongin’s fourth phase, Chey said the company would need to build elsewhere once phase four is complete. He added that preparation would nee to start early.

Ahead of a June 29 discussion at Cheong Wa Dae, groups including Samsung and SK were reportedly coordinating investment plans. Jangseong, Gwangju, and Onyang were among the location under discussion.

Yongin is planned as an AI memory hub with four fabs for SK hynix, plus suppliers and equipment makers.

The Gyeonggi chip cluster plan targets 622 trillion won (US$411 billion) in private investment by 2047. That includes about 122 trillion won (US$80.5 billion) from SK hynix in Yongin.

Chey’s focus on infrastructure matches government plans for 3 gigawatts of power to Yongin by 2030 and water by 2031. The plans also include support for underground transmission lines.
