SK Group, OpenAI team up on Stargate AI data center

SK Group has signed agreements with OpenAI to collaborate on developing an AI data center in South Korea as part of OpenAI’s Stargate project.

SK Group, a conglomerate based in South Korea, said the deal was formalized at its Seoul headquarters, with chairman Chey Tae-won and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman present.

SK hynix, SK Group’s semiconductor unit, agreed to supply high bandwidth memory (HBM) products for the Stargate project and may meet demand for up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, though final supply details are pending further discussions.

SK Telecom, SK Group’s telecom arm, will work with OpenAI on constructing and operating the AI data center in Korea’s southwest region.

The companies said the partnership aims to strengthen AI infrastructure and support next-generation computing solutions in South Korea.
