Singtel VC arm Innov8 launches $250m AI growth fund
Singtel Innov8, the wholly-owned corporate venture capital arm of Singapore-based Singtel Group, announced the launch of a US$250 million AI Growth Fund.
The fund will invest in global growth-stage AI startups and speed applied AI adoption across the group, targeting companies in customer engagement, network operations, cybersecurity, IT automation, horizontal enterprise AI platforms, and vertical-specific AI solutions.
Innov8 will facilitate collaboration between portfolio companies and Singtel operating units to test and scale solutions in real-world environments.
The new fund supplements Innov8’s existing US$250 million evergreen fund, bringing total managed capital to US$500 million.
Innov8’s investments have generated a 26% internal rate of return since the group’s 2021 strategic reset, and the fund will support deployment across units such as Singtel Singapore, Optus, Digital InfraCo, and NCS.
🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Singtel’s new AI fund is an acceleration, not a beginning
- The new vehicle adds to an existing pool of capital. Singtel Innov8’s evergreen fund rose to US$500 million in 2022 1.
- Innov8 already links startups with Singtel Group’s operating units. That work has led to more than 350 commercial agreements 2.
- The updated focus lands on applied AI. Innov8’s teams in hubs such as San Francisco and Tel Aviv widen the pipeline for the “global growth-stage” companies it wants to back 3.
Telcos are transforming from venture investors into strategic AI integrators
- The move marks a wider turn in corporate venture capital. Firms are shifting from broad tech bets to focused programs that tackle needs such as network automation and cybersecurity 2.
- AI startups get more than funding. They can roll out products through Singtel Group’s ecosystem, which reaches over 820 million mobile customers 3. Traditional venture firms cannot match that reach.
- The approach also helps fend off Big Tech. By backing and deploying specialized AI, regional operators like Singtel can avoid reselling generic platforms while keeping control of the tools they will rely on.
