Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (Singtel), the largest mobile carrier in Singapore, faced a cyberattack by a group allegedly sponsored by China earlier this year, sources revealed.

This attack is part of a series targeting telecoms and critical infrastructure worldwide.

The breach, detected in June, has been linked to Volt Typhoon, according to anonymous sources due to the investigation’s confidentiality.

Singtel, operating in Southeast Asia and Australia, reportedly experienced this breach as a preliminary trial by China for future cyberattacks on US telecoms.

“Singtel wishes to clarify that there was malware detected in June which was subsequently dealt with and reported to relevant authorities. There was no data exfiltrated and no impact to services,” a Singtel spokesperson said in a statement to Tech in Asia on Tuesday.
