Singapore has given Meta until the end of September to introduce new measures, including facial recognition, to tackle impersonation scams on Facebook.

Meta, which operates Facebook, could face a fine of up to S$1 million (US$730,000) if it fails to comply, with additional fines of S$100,000 (US$73,000) per day after the deadline, according to Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs.

The directive, issued on September 24, is the first under Singapore’s Online Criminal Harms Act, which took effect in February 2024.

Earlier this month, police ordered Meta to act against scams involving fake accounts and ads impersonating government officials on Facebook, but did not set a deadline.

Authorities say they have seen a rise in impersonation scams targeting Facebook users in Singapore between June 2024 and June 2025, often using images or videos of government office holders.

Meta has implemented some anti-scam steps globally, but Singapore officials say scams remain a concern in the country.
