Singapore teams with Penn lab on resilient military robots
Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), the city-state’s defense technology arm, said on October 8 that it had partnered with the University of Pennsylvania’s General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab to develop multi-robot systems for complex environments.
DSTA said the research would focus on resilient autonomy for robot teams operating in environments with disrupted communications.
It would also cover edge-optimized agentic AI that can turn human goals into human-approved task plans on board robots.
DSTA said this could reduce operator workload and support the deployment of unmanned platforms for Singapore’s Ministry of Defence and armed forces.
The project comes amid broader military research into autonomy and communications.
The US Army has highlighted these topics, and the Army War College has examined robot communication networks.
Separately, US-Singapore export-control enforcement and dual-use technology controls have been discussed in published analyses.
The partnership announcement did not identify any specific regulatory constraints.
