Singapore energy firm Amplicity raises $1m for battery tech
Amplicity, a Singapore-based energy startup, said it closed a US$1 million seed round on March 31.
It aims to help businesses earn revenue from backup batteries through power market services.
The round added Engie and strategic angel investors to the company’s cap table.
Amplicity said its first deployments are in Singapore and that it is expanding in Australia.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Amplicity’s no-capex approach fits a clear need in Australia’s grid
- Amplicity skips upfront hardware spending for business customers by upgrading existing backup batteries through a performance-based plan 1.
- Company materials estimate more than $180,000 in yearly revenue from an average 1.2 megawatt-hour battery system, turning an aging asset into an income stream 2.
- The setup suits Australia, where grid swings and dependence on fuel imports leave room for more battery capacity 3.
- The seed round matters because early-stage climate tech funding in Australia has tightened, with investors asking for market traction instead of promising tech alone 3.
ENGIE is building a grid-edge portfolio through startup bets
- ENGIE joined the round as part of a wider move by large energy groups to use venture units to assemble tools for a more distributed grid 4.
- ENGIE Factory, the company’s startup investment arm, also backed Phnxx, which sells modular solar and battery systems to industrial sites in the region 5.
- That leaves ENGIE investing in startups while competing with them, since its Southeast Asia division already sells its own Zero CapEx solar and storage systems to businesses 6.
- These bets can give ENGIE a path to test new business models and buy technology that manages customer-owned assets at the grid edge, including batteries installed at customer sites instead of centralized power plants 4.
