Singapore semiconductor startup Nexstrom lands $12m seed
Singapore-based Nexstrom, a semiconductor startup developing wafer-scale 2D semiconductor materials, said on September 22 that it raised a US$12 million seed round led by Xora Innovation, with participation from Foothill Ventures and SEEDS.
Nexstrom said its total funding now stands at US$15 million, including US$3 million in non-dilutive funds. The company said the new capital will help commercialise its wafer-scale platform for 2D semiconductor materials.
Nexstrom said it is developing a platform for 12-inch single-crystal 2D semiconductor materials that can fit into existing foundry manufacturing processes, as chipmakers look beyond silicon for AI and high-performance computing.
That goal is notable because moving from lab-scale flakes to wafer-scale single crystals is considered a bottleneck for industrial use.
Research also says full-wafer integration must overcome challenges including crystal uniformity, defects, and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility.
Similar 12-inch 2D wafer efforts have emerged in China, pointing to broader global activity in the field.
