Singapore merchant startup Cata raises $5.3m
Singapore-based Cata, which sells branded consumer app software to F&B and retail merchants, said it raised US$5.3 million in seed funding led by Portage to expand overseas and add AI features.
The round also included White Star Capital, 468 Capital, FoodLabs, FJ Labs, Rally Cap, and Iterative. It came less than a year after the company launched.
Cata said Germany is its first new market, and its customers include Guzman y Gomez in Singapore.
The company said Guzman y Gomez more than doubled digital sales after rolling out its app across 23 outlets.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Cata’s platform started inside Flash Coffee
- Cata may look new, yet its software began inside Flash Coffee, a coffee chain backed by startup investors 1.
- Flash Coffee put more than US$10 million into the system. It has already handled millions of transactions, so it entered the market with real operating history 1.
- The product lets quick-service restaurant operators replace a patchwork of digital services and cut dependence on delivery apps that often take steep commissions 1.
Branded apps can help reduce customer churn
- Cata’s growth lines up with a wider problem in food and beverage. Many mobile app categories lose more than 80% of users on Day 1 2.
- Merchant-owned apps give businesses direct access to customer data plus the relationship itself. That supports loyalty programs and tailored marketing 1.
- The model also addresses common reasons people leave apps, including weak engagement and poor habit building. Third-party delivery platforms may not tune those features for each merchant 2.
- The same idea is spreading across offline businesses such as wellness and retail, where companies want more control over digital sales. Those segments are on Cata’s roadmap 1.
