Singapore AI startup Featherless raises $20m series A
Featherless.ai, a Singapore-founded and US-headquartered startup, said on April 30 that it raised US$20 million in a series A round co-led by AMD Ventures and Airbus Ventures.
It plans to use the funds to expand its infrastructure, add a marketplace for specialized models, and improve support for different chip and computing setups.
The company said it supports more than 30,000 open models across language, vision, and audio, and hosts infrastructure in the US and Europe to help customers manage data location and privacy requirements.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Featherless backs flat-rate subscriptions with Hugging Face integration
- The funding supports a flat-rate service with unlimited monthly requests and a fixed cap on concurrent requests 1.
- That setup breaks from per-token billing, which often leaves developers with uneven monthly costs 2.
- Featherless also ties into Hugging Face, a popular hub for open-source AI models. The company says it is the largest Large Language Model (LLM) inference provider there, with more than 6,700 open-weight models 3.
- The Hugging Face connection gives developers a direct path to Featherless. Billing can run through Featherless with a provider key, or through Hugging Face at provider rates. Hugging Face users also get monthly credits for routed requests 4, 5.
Flat-rate inference could push AI pricing toward simpler plans
- Inference pricing often shifts with usage details. Output tokens cost 3.74 times more on average than input tokens 2.
- Long-context models add another layer of cost. They raise AI job expenses by 3.1 times on average 2.
- Featherless answers that uncertainty with a subscription plan built around fixed costs and unlimited monthly requests 1.
- If the model catches on, larger cloud providers and smaller inference firms may face pressure to offer pricing that is easier to follow and budget around.
