Sinar Mas invests $2.2m in Indonesian streaming platform Vidio

Sinar Mas Group, through its subsidiary PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa (DSS), has invested 32.8 billion rupiah (US$2.2 million) in the Indonesian streaming platform Vidio.

This funding aims to strengthen Vidio’s capital structure, enhance local content, accelerate technology development, and improve monetization strategies.

The investment is part of a rights issue conducted by PT Vidio Dot Com, a subsidiary of PT Surya Citra Media Tbk (SCMA), which is under PT Elang Mahkota Teknologi Tbk (EMTK).

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Local content strategy fuels Vidio’s dominance in Indonesia’s competitive streaming landscape

Vidio’s success in becoming Indonesia’s leading streaming platform demonstrates how local content serves as a critical competitive advantage against global giants.

The platform attracts approximately 60 million monthly viewers by focusing heavily on localized programming and premium sports content that resonates with Indonesian audiences 1.

This strategy aligns with broader market research showing Indonesian viewers strongly prefer local narratives, with locally-produced shows consistently generating higher ratings than foreign content 2.

Industry leaders like David Fernando Audy, CEO of Indonesia’s largest free-to-air TV broadcaster, have emphasized that local content capabilities give Indonesian companies a significant edge despite the technological advantages of foreign competitors 2.

Vidio’s commitment to producing 100 original series titles by 2025 reflects a deep understanding of this market dynamic, allowing them to outperform international streaming services in their home market.

2️⃣ Monetization challenges persist despite streaming growth in price-sensitive Indonesian market

The Rp32.8 billion investment by Sinar Mas Group addresses one of the fundamental challenges facing Asian OTT platforms: achieving profitability in markets accustomed to free content.

Data shows only 31.5% of Indonesian streaming users subscribe to paid services, significantly lower than global averages and highlighting the region’s preference for ad-supported models 3.

This consumer behavior reflects a broader trend across Asia-Pacific markets, where OTT content captures about 33% of TV viewership but accounts for less than 3% of TV advertising revenue 4.

Price sensitivity remains extremely high, with consumers quickly turning to alternatives—including piracy—if content is perceived as too expensive or advertisements become too frequent 4.
