Shopify posts 32% Q3 revenue jump as traffic from AI tools rises

Shopify reported a 32% rise in Q3 revenue to US$2.8 billion, surpassing expectations, while profit reached US$264 million.

The ecommerce software provider said traffic from AI tools to its stores is up sevenfold since January, with purchases via AI-powered search up elevenfold.

Shopify, based in Canada, has partnered with OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot to expand in-chat shopping experiences.

The company highlighted its internal AI tools, such as Scout, which processes merchant feedback to inform product decisions.

A recent Shopify survey found that 64% of shoppers are likely to use AI for purchases.

Despite reporting operating income slightly below analyst estimates at US$434 million, Shopify emphasized its continued investment in AI-driven commerce.

The company said it is preparing for different models of “agentic commerce” as the technology develops.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Shopify’s AI commerce metrics lack revenue context

  • Shopify cites 7x traffic and 11x orders from AI search since January 1. It has not shared the base or revenue from these channels.
  • Q3 Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) reached US$92 billion 1. Leaders gave no data on AI share of GMV or conversion rates or take-rate impact from AI commerce (take rate is the percentage of GMV Shopify captures as revenue).
  • The 64% shopper intent figure 2 came from a Shopify survey with no method, and Shopify framed it as shoppers likely to use AI in buying process 1. Intent differs from use because many AI shopping features remain experimental. Operating income reached US$343 million 3, while gross margin fell to 48.9% from 51.7% year over year 1.

Non-Shopify merchants can tune for AI shopping surfaces

  • Google is adding shopping to AI Mode (a conversational search interface) with 50+ billion product listings 4 and rolling out agentic checkout (AI agents that can complete purchase steps on behalf of users) 4.
  • Crawlable content (not blocked to search bots), accurate structured data (standardized product tags for search engines), and high-quality images matter per Google 5. These steps lift visibility across AI Overviews (Google’s AI-generated summaries), AI Mode, and search.
  • Martech vendors can build tools for product feed optimization (clean, complete product catalogs) and attribution modeling (measuring which channels drive sales) for AI shopping surfaces. Google’s deployment strategy 6 cut keyword coverage by 57%, so fewer queries trigger AI Overviews, so placement is selective.
