Shein’s UK sales jump to $2.8b in 2024 as profit climbs

Shein’s UK business reported £2.1 billion (US$2.8 billion) in sales for 2024, up 32.3% from the previous year.

The online fast-fashion retailer, founded in China and now headquartered in Singapore, said its UK unit posted a pretax profit of £38.3 million (US$51.8 million), a 56.6% rise year-on-year.

Britain is Shein’s third-largest market after the US and Germany, though the company has not released global results.

Shein has made several attempts to list on public markets, including New York and London, but has faced regulatory and political challenges.

In 2024, Shein expanded its presence in the UK with pop-up shops, a Christmas bus tour in 12 cities, and new offices in Kings Cross and Manchester.

The company has grown its market share as inflation pushes UK shoppers towards cheaper options, and has expanded its product range beyond clothing.

Upcoming changes to customs duty exemptions may raise Shein’s costs in the UK and other markets.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Fast fashion consolidation accelerates as market leaders capture share from struggling competitors

Shein’s 32% UK growth reflects a broader pattern of market share consolidation in fast fashion, where the strongest players are capturing disproportionate gains while traditional retailers struggle.

In 2024, Shein increased its global apparel market share by 0.24 percentage points to 1.53%, making it the largest share gainer in the industry1. Meanwhile, H&M’s market share declined to 1.06% as consumers found their designs “uninspiring”2.

This consolidation is even more pronounced in the US, where Shein now controls 50% of the fast fashion market as of late 2022, up dramatically from just 18% in March 20203.

The trend demonstrates how economic pressures drive consumers toward the most aggressive value players, with Shein’s ultra-low pricing and rapid trend response allowing it to capitalize while competitors like ASOS and Boohoo face significant sales declines1.

2️⃣ Tariff policy changes threaten the business model that enabled Shein’s explosive growth

The customs duty exemptions that fueled Shein’s growth are rapidly disappearing, creating a fundamental challenge to its low-price advantage.
