Shein must hand Indian customer data to Reliance to reenter market
Online apparel retailer Shein must transfer all Indian customer data to Reliance Retail to reenter the Indian market, according to the government during a parliamentary session on Wednesday.
Shein will act as a technology partner, while Reliance Retail Ventures Limited will have full ownership.
This comes as part of India’s ongoing ban on Chinese-linked applications, which began in 2020 due to national security concerns.
Over 300 apps, including Shein, TikTok and Alibaba’s UC Browser, have been prohibited since then.
The partnership requires Shein’s platform to be hosted in India, with all data staying within the country.
Shein will not have access to this information and security audits will be conducted.
