Shein to open first permanent French stores, sparking backlash

Shein will open its first permanent stores in France in November under an agreement with Société des Grands Magasins (SGM), which owns several department stores in the country.

The online fast-fashion retailer will launch “shop-in-shops” at the BHV store in central Paris, and at Galeries Lafayette locations in Dijon, Grenoble, Reims, Limoges, and Angers.

Previously, Shein hosted only temporary pop-up shops in various countries, mainly for marketing.

Yann Rivoallan, president of the Fédération Française du Prêt-à-Porter, criticized the plan, saying Shein floods the market with disposable products and threatens local fashion businesses.

France is considering new rules for fast fashion, including a draft law that could ban Shein from ad.
