Shein delays France store openings after price complaints
Shein has delayed the launch of five new concession stores in France after shoppers at its Paris location found in-store prices higher than online.
The China-based fast-fashion retailer opened its first permanent shop at the BHV Marais department store last week, operated by Societe des Grands Magasins (SGM).
Some customers were surprised at prices for items like fake leather shorts at €41 (US$47.7) and jackets at €65 (US$75.5), similar to competitors like Zara and above Shein’s French website listings.
SGM said it is seeking larger spaces for Shein concessions in regional stores to offer a broader and cheaper product range.
The openings in Dijon, Reims, Grenoble, Angers, and Limoges have been postponed with no new dates set.
SGM and Shein said they will focus on improving the product mix and store experience in Paris before further expansion.
France’s finance ministry temporarily suspended Shein’s online platform on opening day but later halted those proceedings.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
France’s fast-fashion bill pressures Shein as pricing gaps surface
- In June 2025, the French Senate passed a revised bill with environmental fees of €5 per item that climb to €10 by 2030, plus a blanket ad ban for ultra-fast fashion platforms (retailers that release new styles at very high speed and volume) like Shein 1.
- Penalties focus on non-European platforms, while big European retailers avoid the ad ban and top fees 1. These rules could push Shein to lift prices or trim its French presence.
- France fined Shein nearly €200 million for consumer protection breaches in the past three months 23. The Paris prosecutor’s office opened a probe after reports of prohibited items on the site 23.
- Delayed store openings coincide with a pricing mismatch incident and shifting French rules. This clouds Shein’s low-price model.
Omnichannel (selling across online and physical stores) needs real-time pricing sync
- Shein’s channel price gap shows a wider problem for pure-play online retailers (brands that sell only online) moving into stores. These gaps confuse shoppers and can kill a sale 4.
- Vendors sell unified order management systems. This software centralizes orders and pricing. It also covers promotions plus inventory across stores and websites. The tools sync data in real time 54.
- Dynamic pricing software adjusts prices using market trends, demand, or costs across digital plus physical touchpoints 6.
- Private equity and venture investors can back Business-to-business (B2B) software built for European retail. Look for localized tools for multi-country and multi-channel operations 7.
