Shanghai startup begins mass-producing its humanoid robots

Shanghai-based robotics startup AgiBot has begun mass production of its humanoid robots, marking a significant milestone for China’s robotics industry.

The company has so far manufactured 962 units as of December 15, 2024.

Founded in February 2023 by Peng Zhihui, a former recruit from Huawei, AgiBot specializes in general-purpose humanoid robots for commercial applications.

AgiBot is backed by major investors such as HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), Hillhouse Investment, and BYD.

China’s robotics sector is gaining momentum with increased government support, including up to 10 million yuan (around US$1.37 million) in subsidies from Chongqing and a five-year development plan from Hangzhou.
