SG orders Meta to block FB posts seen as influencing its election
Singapore authorities have ordered the blocking of several Facebook posts by foreigners accused of interfering in the country’s general election set to be held on May 3.
The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), acting as Assistant Returning Officer, directed Meta, Facebook’s parent company, to restrict access to these posts.
On April 25, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Elections Department (ELD) issued a joint statement identifying three individuals involved.
They are Iskandar Abdul Samad, national treasurer of Malaysia’s Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS); Mohamed Sukri Omar, PAS Selangor Youth chief; and Zulfikar Mohamad Shariff, an Australian citizen who renounced his Singapore citizenship in 2020.
The Parliamentary Elections Act prohibits foreigners from participating in election activities or publishing online election advertising.
The blocked posts reportedly targeted Singaporean voters, urging decisions based on racial and religious lines. Authorities warned that such actions could undermine the nation’s multiracial harmony.
