SG manufacturing rises on strong AI chip, server demand

Singapore’s manufacturing sector recorded growth in November, with the purchasing managers’ index (PMI) rising to 50.2 from 50 in October.

A PMI above 50 signals industry expansion.

The electronics sector, which makes up 40% of Singapore’s manufacturing output, posted a PMI of 50.6, its sixth month of consecutive growth.

Analysts pointed to continued global demand for AI chips, server hardware, and seasonal consumer electronics as key drivers.

Indexes for new orders, imports, and input prices expanded at a faster pace, while finished goods saw slower growth.

The order backlog index contracted for the first time since May 2023, which some economists said could signal future risks for production if the trend persists.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Electronics PMI shows a split between exports and sentiment

  • November’s electronics purchasing managers’ index (PMI) was 50.6, marking six months of expansion. October shipments jumped, with integrated circuits up 40.9% and PCs 77.7%. Overall NODX in electronics grew 33.2% year-on-year, which makes the PMI look soft 1, 2.
  • The order backlog index logged its first drop since May 2023, which clashes with October NODX posting the fastest rise since November 2021 at 22.2% 1, 2. Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), the government’s enterprise development agency, says tariff effects will show up in 2026 and that the practice is easing, which can weigh on survey views on backlogs even as shipment data stays firm 3.

Semiconductor equipment suppliers can tap Singapore’s planned fabrication capacity expansion

  • The NXP–Vanguard joint venture will build a US$7.8 billion silicon wafer fabrication facility (fab) set to open by 2027 4. It will need lithography (patterning), etching (material removal), and metrology (measurement) tools. NXP, a Netherlands-based chipmaker, and Vanguard International Semiconductor, a Taiwan-based contract chip manufacturer, lead it.
  • Singapore’s semiconductor sector generated over S$133 billion in 2023 and accounted for around 20% of global semiconductor equipment production 4. The country holds 5% of global wafer capacity with more fabs planned, so backend (post-fabrication) providers can plug into supply chains serving AI chips 4.
  • The Refundable Investment Credit is a government incentive offering up to 50% support on qualifying expenditures, including capital expenditures 4. It can lower start-up costs for equipment suppliers that build assembly or service sites.
