SG data center BDx inks deal with Taiwanese renewables firm

BDx Data Centers has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hexa Renewables to add at least 50 MW of renewable energy to the Singapore-Malaysia energy grid.

The agreement will see BDx indirectly import green energy from HEXA’s new projects in Malaysia to support sustainable data center infrastructure in Singapore.

The partnership backs Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 and helps address challenges in sourcing renewable energy locally.

BDx said the deal will also fund new clean energy projects in Malaysia, as part of its broader sustainability strategy to deploy 1 GW of capacity across the region.

Hexa Renewables is targeting up to 5 GW of renewable energy and battery storage projects in Asia Pacific.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cross-border renewable energy emerges as essential strategy for land-constrained Singapore

Singapore’s geographic limitations make cross-border energy partnerships a practical necessity for meeting its climate goals.

The city-state aims to achieve 8.6 GWp of renewable energy capacity by 2050, but faces severe land constraints for large-scale solar installations1.

Meanwhile, neighboring Malaysia has significant untapped solar potential estimated at 138 GW in Peninsular Malaysia alone, creating a natural complementary relationship1.

Singapore is already developing frameworks to recognize renewable energy certificates from cross-border electricity trading, with the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project serving as a successful model for such arrangements2.

This partnership structure allows Singapore to access renewable energy at scale while enabling Malaysia to monetize its abundant solar resources through guaranteed long-term contracts.

2️⃣ Data center growth drives massive regional renewable energy investment requirements

The rapid expansion of data center capacity across Southeast Asia is creating unprecedented demand for clean energy infrastructure investment.

Singapore alone expects to add over 300 MW of data center capacity in the near term, while the broader Southeast Asian region needs approximately US$27 billion annually from 2026 to 2030 to achieve its 23% renewable energy target by 20253.
