SG-based Sylvan partners SK Innovation in $300m hydrogen push
The Sylvan Group, a Singapore-based private equity firm backed by Hyundai family members, has partnered with SK Innovation to invest about US$300 million in South Korea’s hydrogen mobility sector.
The funds will be used through SK Hyverse to develop 29 liquefied hydrogen refueling hubs and support the operation of over 6,000 hydrogen-powered buses by 2029.
SK Innovation, the energy arm of SK Group, will secure hydrogen through long-term sourcing from its existing liquefied hydrogen production facilities in Incheon.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SK’s Incheon hydrogen plant faces operational risk as government tender cancellation signals weak demand
- SK E&S is an SK Group energy unit that runs an Incheon plant making 30,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen a year, enough for 5,000 buses 1. The plan targets more than 6,000 by 2029, so SK Hyverse needs multi-year offtake (long-term purchase) and supply deals for the refuelling hubs.
- South Korea cancelled the 2025 clean hydrogen power tender on the final day 2. The 2024 round won only 750 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year against a 6.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) target 2, which raises demand and subsidy risk for SK Hyverse’s hubs as coal exits by 2040 2.
Third-party tech vendors can target upcoming station software and safety tenders before 2029 rollout
- Running 29 refuelling hubs needs liquefied hydrogen station monitoring software 3, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for regulatory compliance, and real-time payment systems. The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (a state agency that regulates gas safety) already issues maintenance tenders for these services 3, and Korea Gas Technology Corporation (a state-owned engineering services provider) set a single-station supply contract at Korean won (KRW) 83 million 4.
- Cybersecurity specialists can sell operational technology (OT) protection for hydrogen stations as South Korea expands refuelling infrastructure. Time bids to match the phased investment rollout before rivals lock in positions.
