SG AI science startup ChemLex raises $45m led by Granite Asia
ChemLex, an AI-for-science startup based in Singapore, has raised US$45 million in a funding round led by Granite Asia and is launching a self-driving laboratory for drug discovery.
Founded in 2022, ChemLex develops AI tools aimed at speeding up chemical discovery for the pharmaceutical sector.
The company said it now serves more than 70 customers globally, including several leading pharmaceutical firms.
ChemLex’s new laboratory in Singapore will use an autonomous chemistry system that runs experiments with minimal human intervention.
The company plans to use the new funding to hire more engineers and chemists in Singapore.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
ChemLex’s autonomous chemistry claims lack end-to-end, customer-validated performance data
- Peer-reviewed work pegs regioselectivity accuracy at 96.51% and reaction feasibility at 89.48% using Bayesian deep learning (a machine-learning approach that estimates uncertainty) 12. These numbers cover narrow tasks, not the full “autonomous chemistry system” performance.
- High-throughput setup (running many experiments in parallel) ran 11,669 reactions in 156 hours and handles 240 to 288 reactions per day 2. The company has not shared customer-validated gains in timelines, hit rates, or costs across its 70-plus customers.
- ChemLex sells discovery services with AI-powered libraries that span tens of millions of molecules 34. The sources include no case studies or patents that compare its self-driving laboratory with traditional contract research organizations (CROs).
Singapore’s automated chemistry infrastructure creates procurement opportunities for lab equipment vendors
- A new Singapore lab plus a tie-up with the Experimental Drug Development Centre for small‑molecule automation need robotics, liquid handlers (robots that automate pipetting), plus analytical instruments under EPU/LTE/10 (the category for laboratory testing equipment) 56.
- Integrators and instrument makers should track GeBIZ (the government’s e-procurement portal) tenders from life‑science agencies 76. Automated synthesis usually drives buys for compatible hardware, software integration, and maintenance with sizable budgets.
- Firms with Government Supplier Registration (GSR) in the S10 financial grade can bid on contracts up to $30M for lab automation in this sector 6.
