SF Vanara Capital, backed by TPG, targets tech growth investments
TPG Inc. is backing a new investment firm, Vanara Capital, which will focus on growth-stage tech companies.
Vanara is a San Francisco-based firm started by Neil Kamath and Hayden Lekacz, both former TPG investors.
The firm targets tech companies in sectors such as software, internet, and tech-enabled services, with planned equity investments of US$10 million to US$50 million in companies generating at least US$15 million in revenue.
TPG Next, which invests in new fund managers, will be an anchor investor in Vanara’s first fund and hold a minority stake.
Acrisure CEO Greg Williams will also invest in Vanara’s inaugural fund.
Vanara will have access to TPG’s network and infrastructure as it raises capital and builds its team.
Kamath and Lekacz previously worked together at TPG and Spectrum Equity, including leading a pre-IPO investment in Reddit and joining a late-stage funding round for ServiceTitan.
TPG has previously seeded other investment firms such as Cohere Capital, Demopolis, and Ardabelle Capital.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Growth equity fills a specific market niche between venture capital and private equity
Vanara’s focus on companies generating $15 million or more in revenue positions it firmly in the growth equity space, which targets established businesses with proven models rather than early-stage startups.
Growth equity investments typically involve minority stakes that allow existing management to retain control, contrasting with private equity’s preference for majority ownership and operational restructuring2.
This investment approach generally carries lower risk profiles compared to venture capital due to the established nature of the target companies, while still offering significant growth potential3.
The $10-50 million investment range Vanara plans to deploy aligns with typical growth equity deal sizes, targeting companies that have moved beyond startup uncertainty but still need capital for expansion rather than operational turnaround4.
2️⃣ Established private equity firms increasingly launch specialized platforms to capture niche opportunities
