Sequoia leads $140m series D for AI startup Fal
Fal, a San Francisco-based platform for real-time generative media, has raised US$140 million in a series D round led by Sequoia, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Alkeon Capital, and NVentures, the venture arm of Nvidia.
Existing investors including a16z, Kindred Ventures, Meritech, Bessemer Venture Partners, Notable Capital, Shopify Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures also joined the round.
This marks Fal’s third fundraise in 2025, after its series B and series C rounds earlier this year.
The company, which provides infrastructure for AI-generated content, said it will use the new funding to expand its engineering and go-to-market teams, and develop new product lines.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Fal’s $140M at $4.5B values Fal near 22.5x revenue; primary vs secondary still unclear
- Revenue topped $200 million by October 1, which puts the $4.5 billion mark near 22.5x sales. This is the third raise in 2025 1 after a roughly $1.5 billion valuation in July 2.
- TechCrunch said the round included $140 million in primary capital plus a secondary sale 1. Primary means new shares sold by the company, secondary means insiders sell existing shares. The secondary size stayed undisclosed, so dilution remains hard to read. ARR growth and unit economics (the per-customer revenue and cost profile) stay undisclosed, which clouds any view on efficiency.
Real-time AI opens near-term partner plays
- Fal’s models can create images in under 100 milliseconds 3. WebSocket endpoints (a protocol that keeps a persistent two-way connection open) support bidirectional connections 4, which drives needs for low-latency CDN or edge compute (servers located close to end users). The unified API spans 600+ models 5 across image, video, or audio.
- Partners can add watermarking, provenance tracking (verifying content origin), or compliance layers (tools that help satisfy legal and brand-safety requirements). System integrators (consultancies that build and implement software for enterprises) can build vertical-specific (industry-specific) wrappers or workflow automation around Fal’s API for Adobe, Shopify, Canva, or Quora 1. That aligns with go-to-market (GTM) expansion plans 6. Developers can use the real-time API documentation 37 and demo applications 8 to test prompt optimization or model analytics that track latency, quality, or cost.
