Sequoia Capital leads B2B commerce startup’s $34m series A

San Francisco-based startup Nuvo has raised US$34 million in a series A funding round led by Sequoia Capital and Spark Capital.

This follows an US$11 million seed round in 2022, backed by Founders Fund, Index Ventures, and other investors.

Founded in 2021 by CEO Sid Malladi and CTO Rameez Remsudeen, Nuvo offers a platform for B2B trade.

The platform aims to modernize the US$11 trillion US physical goods purchasing industry, which still relies on outdated communication methods like faxes and emails.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ B2B commerce is finally catching up to consumer platforms after decades of underinvestment

Nuvo’s approach to B2B purchasing represents a significant evolution in an industry that has historically lagged in digital adoption compared to consumer commerce.

The B2B purchasing of physical goods remains surprisingly antiquated, with businesses still relying on faxes, phone calls, and emails in an $11 trillion U.S. industry 1.

This technological gap persists despite clear historical precedent. For example, in 1872, Montgomery Ward revolutionized commerce with mail-order catalogs targeting rural farmers, showing the industry’s long-standing need for innovation to overcome inefficient legacy systems 2.

The modern B2B buyer has fundamentally changed, becoming more informed, connected, and impatient due to internet access, yet the tools available to these buyers haven’t kept pace with their expectations 3.

Research indicates this gap is closing rapidly, with projections showing 80% of B2B transactions will occur online by 2025, a dramatic increase from just 30% today 4.

2️⃣ Network effects create powerful moats in B2B platforms through verification

Nuvo’s strategy of having sellers invite buyers who then invite additional sellers mirrors successful network-building approaches from consumer platforms but addresses unique B2B trust barriers.

As Sequoia partner Bryan Schreier noted, “The potential for network effects reminds us of other great companies Sequoia has been fortunate to partner with, including payments giants PayPal and Stripe,” highlighting how each new customer brings their entire business network 5.

The platform’s real-time verification of business information directly addresses the significant risk and trust issues in B2B transactions, where fraud and delays can cause substantial losses, creating value beyond simple connections 6.
