Sequoia Capital leads $25m series A round of AI accounting firm

AI-powered accounting software firm Rillet has secured US$25 million in a series A funding round led by Sequoia Capital. Existing investors, including First Round Capital, Creandum, and Susa Ventures, also participated.

This follows the company’s previous US$13.5 million raised in seed and pre-seed rounds ten months ago.

The new capital will be used to expand operations and enhance the platform.

Founded three years ago by Nicolas Kopp, former US CEO of N26, Rillet uses machine learning and generative AI to automate financial reporting.

The software integrates with platforms like Salesforce, Stripe, and Ramp. It can automatically generate financial statements, including balance sheets and income statements.

Rillet has reported a five-fold revenue increase since launching its product last year. The company now has nearly 200 clients, including Windsurf and Decagon.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The financial ledger software market is experiencing its first major disruption in decades

General ledger systems represent one of the most conservative segments in enterprise software, with remarkably long product lifecycles compared to other business applications.

Double-entry bookkeeping, the foundation of modern accounting, has remained fundamentally unchanged since its formalization by Luca Pacioli in 1494 1.

NetSuite, mentioned in the article as Rillet’s primary competitor, was developed in the late 1990s and has dominated the mid-market for nearly 25 years despite its “slow and clunky” interface.

This extraordinary stability explains why Sequoia partner Julien Bek initially believed VCs wouldn’t invest in new general ledger startups, as the incumbency advantage has historically been too powerful to overcome.

The fact that one-third of Rillet’s deals come from replacing established systems like NetSuite signals a significant shift in a market where replacement cycles typically span decades rather than years.

2️⃣ AI in accounting is evolving from task automation to intelligent advisory systems

Accounting software has traditionally focused on digitizing manual processes, but AI-powered systems like Rillet represent a fundamental shift toward intelligent processing that can interpret financial data.
