Sequoia backs ex-Apple exec’s new AI CPU startup Nuvacore

Former Apple executive Gerard Williams has formed Nuvacore and is finalizing a seed round backed by Sequoia Capital for CPUs aimed at AI and data centers.

The company expects to pursue a series A round within months and is opening offices in Silicon Valley, Austin, and Markham in Ontario.

Williams said faster CPUs are needed to ease data center bottlenecks as AI use rises, while Arm and Nvidia have announced products in the area, and demand for its data center chips has surged.

Williams cofounded Nuvia with John Bruno and Ram Srinivasan, and Qualcomm bought that startup for US$1.4 billion in 2021.
