Sequoia-backed healthtech AI platform Anterior nets $40m

Anterior, a healthcare AI platform based in New York, has raised an additional US$40 million, bringing its total funding to US$64 million.

The oversubscribed round included existing investors NEA and Sequoia Capital, along with new backers FPV and Kinnevik.

The company focuses on integrating AI directly into clinical workflows for health plans, with a clinician-led deployment approach to improve accuracy and adoption.

Since its series A in June 2024, Anterior has expanded deployments across major US health plans, supporting organizations covering over 50 million lives.

It reports a clinical accuracy of 99.24%, validated by KLAS Research.  The company says it has reduced review cycles by about 75%.

Anterior also added senior healthcare leaders as advisers to support its growth and enterprise governance.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Anterior’s new funding builds on earlier Series A support

  • Ahead of this $40 million round, Anterior raised $20 million in Series A funding in June 2024 at a reported $95 million valuation 1.
  • That Series A backed efforts to automate prior authorizations, which means getting health insurance approval before a medical procedure 1.
  • The company, once called Co:Helm, aims to reduce the paperwork load in U.S. healthcare, which some estimates place near $1 trillion 2, 3.
  • The latest round is more than twice the earlier one within months, and investors are betting on AI that fits into clinical workflows for health plans 4.

The funding points to a shift in enterprise AI plans

  • The raise fits the ‘AI co-pilot’ approach in regulated fields. Sequoia describes Anterior’s software as supporting human experts rather than replacing clinicians, while aiming to cut administrative work 5.
  • The deal also tracks investor interest in vertical AI, where value comes from tackling defined expensive problems like insurance administration instead of building general-purpose foundation models 2.
  • By speeding up health plan (payer) workflows, the tools could shorten delays in care and ease tension between insurers and healthcare providers. The cited materials do not confirm this wider outcome 5.
