SenseTime open-sources AI model, pushes into robotics
SenseTime’s new venture, Ace Robotics, has launched an open-source AI model and released its first robotic dog as part of its entry into embodied intelligence.
Ace Robotics introduced Kairos 3.0, a model that simulates the physical world, along with a developer platform called KaiWu.
The products were announced by Ace Robotics, a new venture from SenseTime, on December 18.
SenseTime said Kairos 3.0 is designed to run on graphics processing units from Chinese chip makers MetaX Integrated Circuits and Biren Technology.
The company also said its new video-generation model, Seko 2.0, was successfully adapted for chips from Cambricon Technologies after a strategic partnership formed in October.
SenseTime, which has faced US sanctions, was one of the first Chinese tech firms to adopt domestically produced chips for its AI systems.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SenseTime chip claims lack clarity on real-world use
- SenseTime says Kairos 3.0 runs on MetaX and Biren GPUs. Public materials, including MetaX’s IPO filing, do not prove parity with Nvidia or AMD 1.
- MetaX holds 1% of China’s AI chip market, remains unprofitable, while Biren is pre-IPO (before its initial public offering) and is pursuing a Hong Kong listing 12.
- The Seko 2.0 port to Cambricon came soon after their October tie-up, which hints at shallow optimization or reliance on Cambricon frameworks for running trained models (inference).
- Coverage lacks latency numbers and energy use comparisons for Chinese accelerators (specialized chips like GPUs). It also lacks software maturity or volume-production clarity. That makes SenseTime’s migration look like sanctions adaptation more than proven engineering.
Open-source push could help build China-focused AI infrastructure
- Ace Robotics’ open-source release pairs with Kairos 3.0 and the KaiWu developer platform. Developers can build tooling and software development kits (SDKs), inference services, plus cloud integrations for Chinese AI accelerators.
- Moore Threads (a Chinese GPU startup) raised $1.1 billion, while Biren closed a Chinese yuan (CNY) 1.5 billion round in June 2025 and is pursuing a Hong Kong listing 12.
- Investors and startup operators can target middleware solutions such as model optimization frameworks, distributed training, or multi-chip deployment tools that tackle performance gaps versus Nvidia systems 3.
- MetaX’s IPO had over-4,000x retail oversubscription (small-investor demand far exceeding available shares) 1, which suggests interest that reaches beyond chips to the wider China AI stack and could create exits for infrastructure startups.
