Semiconductors power Korea’s $67.5b export jump

South Korea’s exports rose 29% year-on-year to US$67.5 billion in February, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, driven by a record surge in semiconductor exports.

Imports climbed 7.5% to US$51.9 billion and the trade surplus widened to US$15.5 billion, the largest monthly surplus on record and the 13th consecutive monthly surplus since February 2025.

Semiconductor exports jumped 160.8% to US$25.2 billion and topped US$20 billion for a third straight month, supported by stronger AI investment and higher memory prices.

Exports to the United States, China, and ASEAN all rose. This was the highest February export value on record, with average daily exports rising 49.3% to US$3.6 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The AI boom is driving a memory chip supercycle

  • The current run-up in memory costs goes beyond a routine upswing.
  • Spot quotes for some standard modules jumped hard year over year, with 16GB DDR4 (Double Data Rate 4) reportedly up 2,352% 1.
  • Korean makers such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have cut NAND (a type of flash memory) output while shifting capacity to High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a high-speed memory used in AI chips and data centers 2.
  • Tighter supply has followed, with the president of Winbond Electronics forecasting DRAM (Dynamic Random-Access Memory) to rise 90% to 95% this quarter 1.
  • NAND flash used in products like solid-state drives also climbed, with a 64.8% one-month jump after production cuts 2.

Korea’s AI chip surge is raising costs across tech

  • Record growth in South Korea’s semiconductor exports is pushing up component expenses worldwide 1.
  • PC makers face pressure, with analysts warning shipments could fall 5% to 9% as 70% of memory output moves to AI data centers 1.
  • Memory’s share of a typical server bill of materials reportedly climbed from about 30% to 65% to 70% in under two years 1.
  • This momentum ties to a longer plan, backed by 622 trillion won ($471 billion) in initial private investment for a proposed semiconductor mega-cluster in Yongin led by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix 3.
