Sembcorp, Nxera explore low-carbon power for data centers

Sembcorp Utilities, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries, and Nxera Singapore, Singtel Group’s AI data center arm in Singapore, said on October 26 that they signed a memorandum of understanding to explore renewable and low-carbon power supply for Nxera’s facilities in Singapore.

The companies are assessing low-carbon hydrogen-based and biomethane-based generation, vertical building-applied solar panels, and renewable power imports from a 2.2 GWp floating solar project at Linggiu Reservoir in Johor, Malaysia.

Singapore has granted approvals for 900 MW of Malaysian solar imports, including supply linked to the Linggiu Reservoir project. Those approvals do not establish a supply commitment to Nxera.

The deal also comes as Singapore’s data center sector operates under binding rules meant to support cleaner energy use as digital infrastructure expands.
