US self-care tech firm Boulevard nets $80m series D

California-based firm Boulevard has raised US$80 million in its series D funding round, increasing its valuation to nearly US$800 million.

The funding round was led by JMI Equity, with contributions from Index Ventures and VMG Partners.

Founded in 2016, Boulevard offers scheduling and payment software for the self-care industry.

Its clients include hair salons, barbershops, spas, and medspas.

The company initially developed a machine learning-based booking system to help salons optimize appointment scheduling.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The medspa evolution created new software needs beyond traditional EMRs

The medical spa industry emerged in the late 1990s alongside FDA clearance of the first cosmetic lasers, fundamentally changing beauty services by merging traditional treatments with medical procedures 1.

Early medical spas faced significant technological limitations. Initial laser hair removal only worked for fair skin with dark hair, often causing burns on darker skin tones, while wrinkle treatments required substantial recovery time 1.

This evolution explains why Boulevard discovered that traditional electronic medical records systems weren’t meeting medspa needs. These businesses operate primarily on a cash-pay model rather than insurance billing, requiring different software capabilities.

The industry’s rapid growth since its inception has been accompanied by safety concerns, with a 2007 NBC investigation revealing a 41% increase in patients seeking help for botched treatments from undertrained technicians 2.

Boulevard’s ability to capture 15% of U.S. medspas in just three years demonstrates how specialized software addressing these unique operational needs can rapidly gain market share in an evolving industry segment.

2️⃣ Beauty industry transformation driven by wellness integration and generational shifts

The global wellness market has reached a staggering $2 trillion valuation, with younger generations prioritizing wellness more than their predecessors. 84% of U.S. consumers now identify wellness as a top priority 3.

Millennials and Gen Z drive this trend, accounting for over 41% of annual wellness spending and creating demand for integrated services that combine traditional beauty treatments with medical innovations 3.
