US SEC targets July for crypto exemption proposal
The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s updated agenda shows “Regulation Crypto” is targeted for July.
The proposal could create temporary exemptions from securities registration for some crypto developers and issuers.
SEC Chair Paul Atkins outlined the idea in March. The proposal remains under review at the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.
It would allow some fundraising tied to crypto investment contracts and create a safe harbour for issuers stepping back from managerial efforts.
Separate SEC work on crypto custody and market structure is also on the agenda.
The concept is not new at the agency. In 2021, the SEC published Commissioner Hester Peirce’s “Token Safe Harbor Proposal 2.0” after she outlined an earlier version in 2020.
Public materials do not yet show how any “Regulation Crypto” exemption would apply to pending or future SEC enforcement cases, or which crypto business models would benefit most.
