🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Google teams up with Sea as cloud AI spending climbs
- The partnership sits inside a tough contest among Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) for large AI workloads 1.
- Alphabet’s 2026 capital expenditure is projected at US$175 billion to US$185 billion, aimed at adding more AI capacity 1.
- That buildout has helped Google Cloud reach 48% year-over-year revenue growth in 4Q 2025 and log a US$240 billion backlog of committed spending 1.
- Working with Sea lets Google turn infrastructure spending into longer-term demand while supporting new AI features across Garena, Shopee, and Monee.
AI infrastructure power concentrates among a few giants
- AI systems cost so much to build that only a small group can bankroll the needed data centers, chips, and power at scale 1.
- AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud made up 67% of the global cloud infrastructure services market in Q2 2024, which can nudge regional consumer internet groups like Sea toward one of the three for top-tier AI capacity 2.
- Rivals in Southeast Asia may speed up AI rollouts through one of the other two providers to match Sea’s upgraded shopping, gaming, and payments features.
- Competitiveness may hinge on which multi-trillion-dollar tech platform a company picks as its AI partner, as much as its own product work 1.
