Sea founder Forrest Li sees $1t valuation as possible through AI

Sea Ltd. founder Forrest Li told employees that achieving a trillion-dollar market capitalization is possible as the company increases its focus on AI.

Sea Ltd., based in Singapore, operates ecommerce platform Shopee across Southeast Asia and Latin America, and gaming business Garena in Southeast Asia.

In a memo marking the eighth anniversary of Sea’s public listing, Li said leveraging AI could help the company reach this valuation, but emphasized the need for disciplined execution and strong competition.

Sea has started using AI in areas such as customer service and gaming, after making the technology a bigger priority over the past year.

Li cautioned employees about potential share price volatility, referencing a previous stock drop in late 2021, but noted that Sea is now profitable in all three of its main business lines and is less dependent on external funding.

He did not provide details about future AI projects or strategies to address competition from regional and global rivals including ByteDance, Alibaba, Shein, and Temu.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Sea’s AI pitch lacks detail for its trillion-dollar goal

  • Li likens AI to the personal computer (PC) plus smartphone waves yet offers no AI spend, roadmap, or KPIs to back a 10x valuation. On the Q1 2025 call, Sea said AI work covers search, ad targeting, and seller tools 1. Shipping subsidies hurt the reported take rate (the percentage of transaction value kept by the platform). Shopee’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin is near 0.9% of Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) versus a 2–3% goal 1.
  • Leaders credited unit-economics gains to scale, cost cuts, and monetization. Ad revenue rose more than 50% year over year (YoY), yet the team gave no AI split 1. The company has not disclosed AI capital expenditures (capex), cloud partners, or graphics processing unit (GPU) purchases.
