SEA fintech funding drops to $193m in Q1 2025: report

Funding in Southeast Asia’s fintech sector totaled US$193 million in Q1 2025, a 30% decline from the previous quarter and 66% lower than Q1 2024, according to Tracxn.

January was the most active month, accounting for 57% of total funding.

Seed-stage funding reached US$34.1 million, down 52% year-on-year. Early-stage rounds secured US$101 million, a 68% drop, while late-stage rounds brought in US$58 million, down from US$195 million last year.

Cryptocurrencies, alternative lending, and investment tech performed best.

Sygnum raised US$58 million in a series C round and became the only fintech unicorn globally in 2025.

Singapore led the region with 74% of total funding, followed by Thu Duc and Petaling Jaya.

The quarter saw six acquisitions, including Titanlab’s US$30 million purchase of Coinseeker.

Despite the downturn, digital adoption and region-specific strategies continue to drive sector growth.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Southeast Asia fintech’s multi-year funding decline reflects market maturation

The 66% year-over-year drop in Q1 2025 funding is part of a prolonged downward trend that began after the market peak in Q3 2021, not just a quarterly fluctuation1.

This decline represents a 75% reduction from the $6.3 billion raised in 2022 to just $1.6 billion in 2024, indicating a fundamental market shift rather than temporary volatility2.

The persistence of acquisition activity (six deals in Q1 2025, up 20% from Q4 2024) suggests the ecosystem is consolidating as investors prioritize profitability over growth-at-all-costs1.

The absence of $100M+ funding rounds in Q1 2025 further demonstrates how investor expectations have reset, with capital now flowing more selectively to ventures showing clear paths to sustainability1.

The sector is experiencing the natural progression from hypergrowth to rationalization that typically follows periods of exuberant funding, with late-stage rounds particularly affected (down 70% year-over-year)1.
