Scale AI founder defends military ties, urges US AI focus

Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI, defended the company’s military contracts during a discussion at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington.

He said national security is a vital area for AI applications and stressed the importance of the US staying ahead in AI to address security challenges.

Wang mentioned his upbringing in Los Alamos and a visit to China, where he saw AI used for surveillance.

That moment, he said, made it clear the US needed top talent and companies focused on national security.

Scale AI, which labels data for AI models, works with clients like Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, the US Air Force, and the US Army.

Founded in 2016, Scale AI has raised US$1.3 billion and is valued at US$13.8 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Military contracts bring tech companies both opportunity and liability

When Wang defends Scale AI’s military work as a “moral imperative,” he’s navigating a tension that has challenged many tech companies before him.

Google famously withdrew from Pentagon’s Project Maven in 2018 after approximately 4,000 employees signed a petition opposing the contract, demonstrating how internal resistance can impact corporate decisions 1.

Similarly, Microsoft faced employee protests over military contracts with Israel, with some employees publicly accusing leadership of enabling violence 2.

This tension extends across the tech industry, where executives often frame military collaborations in patriotic terms while significant portions of their workforce express ethical concerns about developing technologies that could be used in warfare 3.

The financial stakes are substantial but complex. Tech-military contracts totaled at least $53 billion between 2018 and 2022, creating powerful business incentives despite potential reputational risks 4.

Wang’s relatively smooth navigation of these waters so far, with Scale AI growing to a $13.8 billion valuation while maintaining military partnerships, represents an exception rather than the rule in an industry often divided over defense work.
