Scale AI affirms independence despite Meta’s $14.3b stake
Scale AI has reaffirmed its independence from Meta, even after the tech giant acquired a 49% stake in the startup.
Interim CEO Jason Droege said Meta will not receive preferential treatment following its US$14.3 billion investment.
Meta, a client since 2019, won’t gain access to internal customer data or receive additional board representation beyond co-founder Alexandr Wang, who recently joined Meta.
Droege added that fewer than a dozen of Scale’s 1,500 employees moved to Meta.
The company remains committed to serving a broad range of clients, including Fortune 500 companies and the US government, not just Meta’s Llama models.
Scale reported US$870 million in revenue in 2024 and expects to hit US$2 billion this year, while also expanding into healthcare, education, and telecom sectors.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Data infrastructure becomes strategic battleground in AI race
Scale AI’s $29 billion valuation demonstrates how critical data infrastructure has become in the AI landscape, transforming from back-office function to strategic asset.
Meta’s substantial $14.3 billion investment for a 49% stake indicates how tech giants are securing specialized capabilities throughout the AI stack, not just focusing on models themselves 1.
This mirrors similar strategic investments like Microsoft in OpenAI and Amazon in Anthropic, where large tech companies secure AI capabilities while avoiding complete acquisitions that might trigger antitrust scrutiny 1.
The data labeling market’s projected growth from $6.5 billion in 2025 to $19.9 billion by 2030 (25% CAGR) highlights the increasing value placed on quality training data as a competitive differentiator 2.
Scale AI’s evolution from pure data labeling to application services generating “nine figures” in revenue demonstrates how infrastructure providers are moving up the value chain to capture more of the AI market.
2️⃣ Independence and trust become delicate balancing act for AI infrastructure providers
Scale AI’s emphasis on independence despite Meta’s significant investment highlights the tension between financial backing and maintaining neutrality in the AI ecosystem.
