🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Pesto AI’s journey reflects evolution of tech talent development in emerging markets

Pesto AI’s transition from its origins as a software engineering training program to a developer recruitment platform demonstrates the evolution of tech talent platforms focused on emerging markets.

Founded in 2017, Pesto initially operated with an innovative income-sharing agreement model where students paid 17% of their post-placement income, creating aligned incentives between the platform and its developers1.

Their early success was notable, with their first cohort achieving average salaries of $47,0001.

This model of upskilling developers in emerging markets like India and connecting them with global opportunities highlights the growing importance of remote talent pipelines in the tech industry.

Pesto’s acquisition by Scale AI, despite the shutdown of its operations, suggests that the expertise in identifying and developing technical talent remains valuable even when the original business model concludes.

2️⃣ Scale AI’s aggressive growth strategy balances acquisitions with substantial capital investments

Scale AI’s acquisition of the Pesto AI team aligns with its broader pattern of strategic growth as it solidifies its position in the competitive AI infrastructure market.

The company has raised an impressive $1.6 billion in funding across seven rounds, including a significant $1 billion in its Series F round in May 2024, demonstrating strong investor confidence2.
